Living abroad

No income from the Netherlands

You are moving abroad and you have no work or income.

Losing your right to a basic health-care plan

If you are moving abroad and you receive no income from the Netherlands, you will usually lose your right to a basic health-care plan. This is generally also the case if you work abroad, but remain living in the Netherlands.

Health-care plan in your new country of residence or work

If you are moving abroad, or if you will be working abroad, you must cancel your basic health-care plan as soon as you know when the change will come into effect. We will use the details you provide to determine the end date of your insurance. You will receive confirmation of this from us.

You will be able to take out a health-care plan in your new country of residence. This may even be mandatory, so make sure that you are properly informed beforehand.

Good to know

  • If you receive pension or benefit payments from the Netherlands and move abroad, different rules apply. Check out our Pension or benefit page to see what applies in your situation.

  • If you are being seconded abroad, this may sometimes affect your basic health-care plan. Read more on our Secondment abroad page.
