Health basic and health premium
If you are not (or are no longer) eligible for a Dutch basic health-care plan, don't worry, ONVZ has the answer — Health Basic and Health Premium.
Health Basic is a health-care plan that covers most of your necessary medical costs, while Health Premium offers more extensive coverage for things like physical therapy (e.g. physiotherapy), dental care and preventive medical investigations. It goes without saying that for most kinds of health-care, you are free to decide which health-care provider you want to go to. Outside of the Netherlands, both health-care plans only cover urgent health-care. These insurances are private health insurances and will not give exemption for the mandatory insurance.
Who it's for
You can take out Health Basic or Health Premium in the following situations:
- You live in the Netherlands and are waiting for a permanent residence permit. Depending on the type of residence permit you receive, you may be able to take out a Dutch basic health-care plan later on.
- You live in the Netherlands, but are not eligible for the Dutch basic health-care plan. You are registered at a municipality. This can be the case if you are a foreign student, for instance.
Unlike the basic health-care plan, Health Basic and Health Premium are subject to a screening procedure to determine whether you are eligible for the plan. This means that you will be asked to answer some questions about your medical history when you take out the plan.
Please note: it is not possible to take out a supplementary and/or dental health-care plan along with Health Basic and Health Premium. Planned health care abroad is not covered.
